The Staff Adviser of the faculty had, last week, announced the cancellation of the elections of the FASA, a decision which has now been reversed by the Dean.
The Dean of the faculty explained that the election will only hold for the position of president which had a tie and was inconclusive, as such a re-run will be held to get a winner, while the winners earlier declared shall maintain the status quo.
In a two-page letter addressed to the Dean, the new EXCO stated that “the petition written by Yunus Abdulhameed and his supporters was contradictory because he (Yunus) was the same person who signed a letter of undertaking issued by the Faculty Electoral Committee to both candidates who contested for the position of the faculty presidency and arrived at a tie with 241 votes each, on May 2. This is because Yunus Abdulhameed of 300 level Languages and Linguistics student and James Emmanuel Onawo of 300 level Theatre and Cultural Studies stated on the signed undertaking that they would accept the outcome of the election that was re-run between the two candidates on May 6, in good faith.”
The new executives appealed to the faculty management to reconsider their decision on the nullification of the entire faculty elections, stressing that the petition and complaints were not on the whole positions contested and won by various candidates at the faculty because it was conducted free, fair and peaceful according to the election results as declared by the ELCOM. Accordingly, the re-run would be conducted to avert any issues that may follow the conclusion and declaration of a winner of the position.
Although, a new date is yet to be announced for the re-run, but there are indications that the election would be conducted as soon as the university resumes fully to commence activities for the next academic session in September, 2014.
