At an event Chaired by the Minister of Information and Communications Mr. Labaran Maku which had many prominent people from all walks of life in attendance, the book was publicly presented at the Raw Material Research and Development Council, Abuja, even though it had been released into the book market earlier in the year.
To get the event rolling, Odoh Diego Okenyedo staged a one man performance of “After the Riot”, one of the stories in the collection, to the accompaniment of drumming and the delight of the audience.
The Key Note Address titled “Understanding Conflict and Conflict Resolution in Nigeria” was delivered by Dr Joseph Golwa of the institute of Peace and Conflict Resolution, Abuja. This is principally because Umaisha’s collection of 17 short stories captures in haunting prose, the effects of violence on the various levels of the Nigerian community.
Dr. Golwa while lamenting the wanton spate of violent conflicts that have characterised the country, described the book as an important tool in understanding the impact of violence on the society.
Dr. Emman Usman Shehu, Director of the International Institute of Journalism was his usual uncompromising self while reviewing the book. In his review titled “Templates of Pain”, he described the themes of the work as topical. He extolled the strengths of the collections and pointed out some defects he feels the author and publishers need to improve on.
The Chief Launcher, Engr. Kailani Mohammed, publisher of the Liberator newspaper commended the author for documenting the pains of the various violent conflicts all over the country on all classes of people in the country and bought five copies of the book for N 1 million, thereby setting the ball rolling.
