Dr Ali stated this when the Minister of Education, Malam Ibrahim Shekarau, visited the commission during his tour of agencies under the ministry in Abuja.
“Before I take my seat, I would like the honourable minister to know that we at the NUC are starved of funds. The NUC that I constituted in 1975 is not the same NUC that I inherited now,” he said.
He lamented that university funds do not go through the commission again as the case in the period under review leaving the commission without funds to adequately supervise universities in the country.
Executive Secretary of the NUC, Professor Julius Okojie, said the commission has made significant progress in the last few years.
He said the commission has received N200 billion from the federal government to develop the capacities of university lecturers, adding that the commission has so far sent some Nigerian scholars abroad for training, noting that it would add value to the quality of academic researchers in the country.
In his response, the Minister of Education, Malam Ibrahim Shekarau, said he was at the commission to begin the tour of agencies under the ministry and promised to look into the challenges facing it with a view to finding solutions to the problems.
