The spokesman of the National Universities Commission (NUC), Ibrahim Yakasai, has said that students’ suspension and expulsion records are not placed under the custody of the commission, but the individual universities.

 A source in the University of Abuja has said that students’ expelled from some universities for misconduct were allegedly considered for admission by other universities. 

He claimed that there was no central agency that kept the records of expelled students and shared them among universities. 

Yakasai said in an interview by telephone that the “commission has no records of the number of expelled students in Nigerian universities. It is information only for the institutions.”  

He also said that faith-based universities were not supposed to compel students to take part in religious activities. 

He said a university was not a secondary school but a ‘universal institution’ where everybody should go and get knowledge and that nobody should be forced to do anything.

He said every university derived its regulations from several resolutions of schools in the country.

“Forcing students is not in the regulations and we hardly get what they are doing because parents don’t report to us,” he said.

He said that parents could take any university doing the contrary to court.
