Speaking at the opening ceremony of a 3-day grant writing workshop, the Executive Secretary of the commission, Professor Julius Okojie, said it was unfortunate that many researchers do not know how to write good proposals.
Professor Okojie regretted that four years ago, the National Research Grant was launched by the TETFUND with the sum of N3bn earmarked for research but only N266m was accessed courtesy of poor research proposals.
He said, “We want to change the concept for the better. The purpose of the workshop is to equip the participants with basic techniques for writing good research proposal.”
The NUC boss urged universities in the country to always encourage their academic staff to conduct research in the areas that will benefit the society, noting that “we want more research on food security, environment, malnutrition and energy.”
He advised that “after choosing relevant topic, as a researcher you are expected to make wider consultations among the relevant stakeholders before you submit the proposal.”
Earlier, the chairman of the Local Organizing Committee of the workshop, Professor Adebisi M. Balogun, of the Federal University of Technology Akure, described research as an important tool of learning.
Professor Balogun said research helps in knowledge creation and transmission in the university system.
