The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) is to establish an online newspaper in an addition to the radio station which it has earlier proposed, President of the union, Comarade Waheed Odusile has announced.
Odusile who addressed newsmen at the NUJ National Secretariat in Jahi, Abuja, also said the union was working towards repositioning the International Institute of Journalism (IIJ) by moving it to its permanent site and concluding the process of its accreditation.
“In view of the high cost of running a hardcopy newspaper, the union may look into establishing an online newspaper for the benefit of the public and funds raised for the Union through online advertisement and subscription,” Odusile said at the NUJ ’President’s ‘First Quarterly Briefing’ on Thursday
Odusile who promised a radio station for the NUJ when he was campaigning to be elected president of the Union earlier this year, said at the briefing that obtaining a license to operate a commercial radio station not only to engage members and the general public but also to generate funds for the NUJ was still work in progress.
On his plan for the IIJ, Odusile said, “It is imperative that the Union repositions the IIJ as well as raise funds to sponsor members to other training institutions. To this end, efforts are being made to move IIJ to its permanent site and to conclude the process of accreditation with the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE).”
Odusile who was elected president of the NUJ late this past July said the briefing of Thursday was the beginning of quarterly briefing that would be organized regularly in fulfillment of his promise to preside over the NUJ transparently, and stressed that the NUJ must be accountable to its members the way members are mandated by the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to hold officials of government accountable to Nigerians.
