NULGE President Ibrahim Khaleel, who spoke weekend in Abuja during inauguration of a nine-man committee to review the service scheme for local government workers, while expressing optimism on improved service welfare, said the current service scheme is outdated as it was last reviewed eight years ago as against the constitutionally recommended two years.
 “This review is long overdue. Last review was done in 2006 and this is 2014. It is supposed to be reviewed after every two years but that has not happened. So we commend President Goodluck Jonathan for bringing up the idea for the review. We believe this will strengthen local government administration in Nigeria because we have been canvassing that the civil service of local government be strengthened,” Khaleel said.
He maintained that for development to reach the grassroots, the local government must be attractive enough to ensure that good hands and brains are willing to offer their services, just as he charged the committee to work hard to ensure that the aspiration of local government workers are met in the new service scheme.
 “We believe that with the review, the National Conference and the constitutional amendment, in the very near future the local government will be more independent, stronger and more participatory,” he enthused. The committee is expected to submit its report in seven days.
