A university don and communication expert Prof Tunji Ibiyemi has called on the Federal Government of Nigeria to return the Nigerian Communication Satellite (NigComSat-1R) back to its original parent body, the National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA) for effective management and utilization of the satellite for the purpose for which it was originally made.
A statement by NASRDA’s spokesman Dr Felix Ale said Prof Ibiyemi made the appeal in Abuja while speaking as a guest speaker at the 2015 Annual Space dialogue.
The statement said the speaker regretted that 42 months after the successful launch of the NigComSat-1R it has not recorded any appreciable achievements or made impact in the lives of the people.
To him the satellite has been underutilized, and he blamed the situation on high level of incompetence and lack of proper supervision and commitment on the part of leadership of the Nigerian communication satellite.
Professor Ibiyemi said there is no way the situation should be allowed to continue as this had constituted a clog in the wheel of progress particularly in the dream, and concerted efforts of the National Space Research and Development Agency which originally came up with the idea of this satellite to better the lot of Nigerians.
The University don maintained that there is no way the communication satellite can be made to achieve its desired objectives as planned by its parent body with its current movement to another ministry that knows little or nothing about its motives and objectives at inception.
