The President Council for the Regulation of Engineers (COREN), Engr. Kashim Ali has said that since 1960 Nigeria has lost $600 billion to corruption in engineering projects in the country.
Engr. Ali stated this in Abuja at the 2015 Engr. Otis Anyaeji maiden lecture with the theme “Engineering Practice: Remuneration and the Way Forward” organised by the Maitama branch of the Nigeria Society of Engineer (NSE).
According to him, the sharp practices were discovered through a multi- disciplinary study initiated by the World Bank to checkmate the excesses in engineering projects.
He said “what we have had over the years is a situation where budgets are not properly packaged because there are sequences in engineering budget packaging like endorsement of conception,  feasibility studies and adaption of engineering designs.
"But we have not been doing that in many of our engineering projects. It is when we get to site that we realised how much work it entails and because of short circuiting of the process, we discovered that we have short changed our selves in many ways. An evaluation and study was initiated by World Bank which put the figure I quoted that over the years this is what we have lost," he said.
