The Council of Registered Builders of Nigeria (CORBON) said it would soon commence the registration and licensing of artisans and craftsmen in the country in order to improve the building industry.
CORBON Registrar, Builder Peter Kuroshi, who said this at the weekend in an exclusive chat with Daily Trust, said the decision was to regulate the activities of artisans and craftsmen so as to sanitize the building and construction industry.
According to him, the National Building Code clearly stipulates that the supervision and regulation of artisans and craftsmen on building site is the responsibility of CORBON.
“We have actually commenced the process of registering and licensing of the artisans and craftsmen. So by the time we have them on our register, we would be able to closely monitor their activities and improve on their job,” he said.
He added that in the nearest future when a builder or developer is engaging them they should look for CORBON license so as to make sure that the  person they engage has been assessed, verified, registered and  licensed to provide whatever services the license is suggesting,” he said.
The Registrar explained that the license is going to be in form of identity card that would indicate the artisans and craftsmen biometric data and their area of trade that they are licensed to provide and by so doing we would be able to monitor their activities.
He identified quackery as the major cause of building collapse in the country, lamenting that most of buildings in the country  especially those in Abuja are substandard and that they seeking ways of improving the quality.
Buldr Kuroshi  said the council has been receiving complain from subscribers that some of the houses produced by developers which they bought  do not meet their expectation as they have to spend almost the money they used in purchasing the building to make it habitable.
