SOGHIN carries out hepatitis B awareness campaign in Bauchi

The Society for Gastroenterology and Hepatology in Nigeria (SOGHIN) Bauchi state chapter has embarked on communities outreach and mass screening of the populace against Hepatitis B infection.
Head of Department Medicine ATBU Teaching Hospital, Dr Mustapha Sabo Umar lamented the increase in the number of people being infected with the disease.
He stated the rate of infection is being aggravated due to the ignorance of the people on the mode of transmission, prevention and treatment adding that the body is worried by the alarming rate at which Hepatitis B is spreading among the communities. ‎‎
He  said that there is also the greater chance of vertical transmission to babies born to an infected mother and  such babies have a 90 to 95 per cent chance of contracting the Hepatitis B virus (HBV) during childbirth.
