Police in Zaria have lamented the escape of a suspected drug baron, who was supposed to be  facing trial in a court in the city.
Police Area Commander in charge of Zaria, Muhammad D. Shehu, said the escape of the suspect poses grave danger to the peace of the city and its environs.
“Recently, our men succeeded in arresting one of the notorious drug barons in Zaria, Sani Lawal (Achai). As the law demands, after 24 hours, we took the suspect to the Chief Magistrate Court at King’s Road, Sabon Gari, Zaria, and asked for two weeks to enable us conduct a proper investigation. The court granted our request. However, two days after, the judge asked us to release the suspect on bail. Of course, there was no way we could release him since there was an initial order by the same court allowing us to keep him in our custody for two weeks. When we took the suspect to court after the two weeks with our armed men, our prosecutor emerged from the court to tell his colleagues that the suspect escaped. I asked that he should be detained and he later confessed that the suspect was allowed to escape through the backdoor of the court,” Shehu said.
