The Kano State government has directed all agencies in charge of roads to henceforth arrest any commercial driver found carrying people in his boot.
The governor, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, who gave the directive yesterday while declaring open the 2015 zonal workshop for Special Marshals organized by the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), said if caught, driver and passengers should be punished.
“Any driver caught with passengers in the boot of his car should be arrested and punished. The passengers should also be punished. Officers of the Federal Road Safety Corps, the Vehicle Inspectors Officers and KAROTA should work together to monitor vehicles entering Kano from all major cities,” he said.
While appreciating what he called the selfless service of the special marshals, the governor said synergy between the three road traffic agencies would help in checking loss of lives occasioned by road accidents.
The zonal commanding officer, ACM Victor Nwakolo, said speeding and overloading are the major causes of accidents on the major roads.
He stressed the need for collaboration among all stakeholders to reduce accidents. He said if motorists could move at a moderate speed and carry only the required number of people, accident rate would  reduce.
