Osun State Governor Mr Rauf Aregbesola has ordered the agric extension officers in the state to leave their offices and go to the farms as he vowed to sack any agric extension officer that fails to perform up to expectation.
The governor said agric extension officer would be attached to a group of farmers, adding that such officers must supervise the activities of the farmers under them and train the farmers on modern farming.
Aregbesola said this while signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) at his office in Osogbo.
The governor said every agric extension officer must determine a specific crop in which he would specialise and train farmers on how to cultivate such crop.
He warned that any agric extension officer that failed to perform would be sacked or demoted.
The governor explained that the MoU between Osun and the IITA was part of the efforts aimed at making agriculture the mainstay of the economy of the state.
In his address, the Director-General of IITA, Dr. Nteranya Sanging, stated that it was time for Nigeria to move from its dependence on oil.
He said that agriculture was one of the best ways to get the teeming youth of Africa employed.
