Farmers in the country have been advised to adopt the use of organic fertilizer as it is a better alternative to the inorganic type.
The chairman and chief executive officer of International Organisation for Good Leadership and Agricultural Development (IOGLAD), Chief Martin Ihesie told Daily Trust in Owerri that the essence of adopting organic fertilizer was because of its proven advantages.
He said that organic fertilizer was economically cheaper and cushions the effect of soil degradation, as well as prevents soil erosion, unlike inorganic fertilizer.
Ihesie explained that crops planted with organic fertilizer do not rotten in the soil before harvesting, even when they over-stay.
He added that because of its benefits, many countries in the world such as America, Australia and Israel have stopped the use of chemical fertilizer.
He described the IOGLAD as an organisation known for its influence in good leadership qualities and the promotion it gives to agricultural development projects in Nigeria.
The chairman disclosed that the association had introduced a network on the sale of organic fertilizer in the country, adding that in the next five years, it would be extended to other African regions.
He revealed that the organisation has been included in organic fertilizer and micro nutrients in the 2014 Growth Enhancement Support Scheme (GESS) by the Fertiliser Department of the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.
Ihesie urged farmers to avail themselves of the opportunity and register to ensure protection from all kinds of risks they had endured for a long time.
