The president of Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG), Comrade Igwe Achese has appealed to the Federal Government to grant local governments full autonomy so that grassroot development would be guaranteed in the country.
Achese said in Lagos that granting local governments autonomy would go a long way to ensure proper accountability and promote rapid infrastructural development.
According to him, the autonomy would make the local government chairmen and councilors more responsive and acceptable to the people at the grass-roots level.
He explained that the autonomy would ensure that direct allocations from the Federation Account are paid directly to them and prevents the funds from being hijacked by state governors.
He added that such direct allocations to the local government chairmen and councilors would ensure prompt payment of salaries and allowances to workers.
