The  National  Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) has expressed concern over the increasing  job losses in the oil and gas sector  as well as  closures of international oil  companies.

The development came as the union announced its full support to the  decision of Petroleum Tanker Drivers (PTD) to begin a nationwide strike today, April 3, over unresolved industrial  issues affecting them. 

The union stated this  in a communiqué  signed by its president, Comrade Igwe Achese, and scribe, Joseph Igbiebor, issued at the end of its Central Working  Committee (CWC) in Lagos at the weekend.

The union noted that assurances by the Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr. Chris Ngige, to stop the spate of job losses  in the sector,  had not yielded any impact.

The union  advocated for the federal government to prevail on the international oil companies in the country to stem the tide of redundancy in the oil and gas industry, just as it  justified the planned nationwide strike of the tanker drivers against the  backdrop of poor remuneration, deplorable working conditions, insecurity on the highways and excesses of some security agencies.
