President of NUT Comrade Michael Olukoya Alogba who signed the document for his union said the project is a group life insurance cover for teachers which “takes proactive steps towards ameliorating the suffering of teachers who might die in the service of the fatherland.”
Alogba added that the scheme even though “sensitive and full of ups and down” was necessary due to the challenges confronting teachers.
“It is sad to recall, that recently, MTN mast fell on a teacher in Lagos and died, our school system had become a victim of Boko Haram insurgence and we sadly lost teachers and pupils to attack.
“We have equally lost a number of teachers to all forms of accidents for which the employer have abandoned their families to the pain of their living their estates. Our union cannot afford such callous and insensitive indifference,” he said.
On her part, Bola Odukale who is the managing director of Capital Express Assurance Ltd assured the union of quality service, while commending NUT for taking “a bold step to protect its members.”
