In a statement by its spokesman, Emmanuel Hwande, the NUT said, “The Nigeria Union of Teachers declares for the umpteenth time, that Academic Staff Union of Secondary Schools (ASUSS) is an illegality which should not be condoned in Nigeria.”
The NUT explained that, in accordance with Section 17(a) and (b) of the Trade Unions Act T.14 LFN 2004 as earlier clarified by the registrar of Trade Unions, unless there is any specific court injunction, Nigeria Union of Teachers is the body that is statutorily registered to organize teachers in the primary and secondary schools in Nigeria.
“It is evidently clear that primary and secondary school teachers are members of the NUT. Consequently, teachers in all affected states where 27.5% and N 18,000.00 National Minimum Wage to teachers have not been paid should join the indefinite strike action.
“Finally, the NUT appreciates the governments of Borno, Cross River, Niger and Sokoto states for having negotiated with the Nigeria Union of Teachers and agreed to implement the 27.5% Teachers Enhancement Allowance and the N18,000.00 Naira National Minimum Wage accordingly.
“We call on teachers in the 7 (Seven) States of Benue, Ebonyi, Edo, Ekiti, Kogi, Ogun, and Zamfara, who have been denied the 27.5% Teachers Enhancement Allowance and the N18,000.00 Naira National Minimum Wage, to remain resolute and focused in the pursuit of their legitimate interests while awaiting further directives from the union on the ongoing strike action,” the statement said.
