Members and staff of the FCT wing of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) Gwagwalada, state office, were on Tuesday thrown into mourning following the death of one of their members, Jessey A. Audu.

Audu was said to have slumped and died while on his way to the office yesterday.

A staff of the NUT, Ibrahim Adamu, said the incident happened around 11am when the deceased who was walking to the office suddenly slumped and died inside a drainage near an army check point in the area.

He said some passersby, who saw the deceased lying inside the drainage and bleeding from his nose, quickly alerted the police in the area.

Adamu said the police, upon arrival at the scene, were told by some passerby that the victim was an NUT staff member and they immediately placed a call to some staff of the NUT who rushed to the scene and evacuated the deceased to the hospital.

He also said that doctors at the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital Gwagwalada later confirmed the victim dead, adding that the remains have been deposited at the hospital’s morgue.

Our reporter learnt that the deceased, who was a cleaner with the FCT NUT state office and a native of Yelwa community in Toto LGA of Nasarawa State, resided in Unguwar Dodo in Gwagwalada Area Council.

It was also learnt that the deceased who was married to one wife with two children was hale and hearty when he left home around 7.12am.

The chairman of the FCT wing of Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Comrade Mohammed Abdullahi Shafas, confirmed the death of the deceased when our reporter visited his office on Tuesday.

Shafas, who was still in shock over the incident, declined to speak further, saying, “I just returned from the hospital where we took Jessy’s corpse to the mortuary.’’

Meanwhile, a staff member who simply identified himself as Chris recounted his last moment with the deceased, saying he was hale and hearty while at work on Monday.

“We were together on Monday. He cleaned up everywhere until around 4pm before closing for work, and he was looking hale and hearty,” he told our reporter.

A police source at the Gwagwalada division also confirmed the death.

He said the remains have been deposited at the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital in Gwagwalada, even as he said investigations are ongoing to ascertain the cause of the death.
