The chairman of FCT wing of the Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT), Comrade Stephen Knabayi, has urged the chairman of Kuje Area Council, Alhaji Abdullahi D. Galadima, to clear promotion arrears of primary school teachers in the area.

Speaking when he led the state standing committee members of the union on a courtesy visit to the chairman in his office yesterday, Knabayi said there were teachers’ promotion arrears for eight months for the year 2012, including three months for 2013, which have not been cleared.

He noted that teachers’ arrears for 18 months, between December 2015 and June 2017, have been cleared by the council, saying, however that there was also yet outstanding nine months promotion arrears for 2015.

He further told the chairman that there was an annual increment for teachers of the council for two months, dating as far back as 2012 and also 11 months for 2017, which have also not been attended to by the council.

The labour leader also called on the council chairman to upgrade some of the teachers that were appointed in 2015 on GL5 to GL7, saying upgrading the teachers would go a long way in boosting his members’ morale in the area.

Responding, the council chairman said his administration would give priority to the welfare of teachers, but that it was unfortunate that when he assumed office he inherited a huge debt.

The chairman, however, promised he would make every effort to ensure that all the pending teachers promotion arrears were cleared this year.
