In a resignation letter dated February 13, 2015 and addressed to the party’s national chairman Alhaji A. A. Salam, Nwanyanwu resigned as the party’s chairman Board of Trustees (BoT) and withdrew his membership of the party but did not state which party he is joining.
He claimed in the letter that he had contacted Alhaji Salam on severa occasions and advised him towards repositioning the party but that the chairman turned down his advice.
“I regret to state that with the turn of events so soon after your assumption of office as national chairman, I am unable to continue to hold the office of chairman of Board of Trustees (BoT) of the party or to continue to associate with the party as a member.
“Consequently, I hereby tender my resignation both as chairman of Board of Trustees of Labour Party and member of the party. I have already taken steps to effect my resignation as member of the party at my ward as required by the party constitution.
“I regret to observe that events in the party, especially with regards to the handling of the recently concluded nomination of candidates on the platform of the party for the 2015 general elections, are not in consonance with the integrity, transparency and accountability for which the party had achieved the reputation over the years,” he said.
The party’s former national chairman explained that he had made a lot of sacrifices in building the party to its enviable height for the past ten years, stressing that the party’s principles and ideals were not compromised.
