Nyong’o displays her new book ‘Sulwe’

Award-winning Kenyan, Lupita Nyong’o is famous for her role in Hollywood. The Oscars recipient has delved into another arm of the creative industry, writing a children’s book, ‘Sulwe.’

Nyong’o’s fans on Instagram were teased with a first look of the book cover with the actress saying, “I wrote a book! It’s called #Sulwe! This is the cover I’m thrilled to share it with you. Sulwe is out October 1 and is available for pre-order today at the link in bio!”

Speaking on why she wrote the book, Nyong’o said, “I wrote #Sulwe to encourage children (and everyone really!) to love the skin that they are in and see the beauty that radiates from within.”

The book which is geared at encouraging children to love themselves is based on the story of a five-year-old girl, Sulwe, growing up in Kenya. It is a work hampering on colorism, self-esteem, and learning that true beauty comes from within. Nyong’o chronicles Sulwe’s story using pictures.

The fact that Sulwe has the darkest skin color in her family and her school, and simply wants to be beautiful and bright, like her mother and sister, makes the youngster uncomfortable and determined to find a way to lighten her skin.

Her mother’s advice which helps her see beauty differently and a magical journey in the night sky opens her eyes and changes everything.

Illustrations for the book were by the writer, illustrator and filmmaker, Vashti Harrison.

‘Sulwe’ will be out on October 1 as pre-ordres have begun.
