The Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Mrs Esther Walson-Jack, has urged members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) to go beyond routine service and make meaningful, lasting impacts in their host communities.

She made the call in Abuja during the Annual Conference of the Association of NYSC National Honours Award Winners and the induction of newly selected awardees into the association.

The event brought together past and present recipients of the NYSC National Honours Award, a statutory recognition designed to reward corps members who distinguished themselves through outstanding Community Development Service (CDS) and other NYSC programmes.

Walson-Jack charged members of the association to remain united and continue to promote honesty, dedication and selfless service in their various places of assignment, noting that their conduct should reflect the core values of the NYSC scheme.

She stressed that impactful community service remains one of the most enduring legacies corps members can leave behind.

Earlier, the President of the association, Dr Emmanuel Eluu, commended members for their continued service to humanity through resilience, hard work and community partnership. He pledged inclusive leadership and promised to carry all members along in advancing the association’s goals.

Eluu also announced plans to establish an awareness committee that would visit NYSC orientation camps nationwide to sensitise corps members on the importance of selfless service and active participation in community development.

 

Speaking after the event, a 2025 NYSC Presidential Award recipient, Umar Babayo, expressed excitement over his induction. Babayo, a graduate of Bauchi State University who served in Daura, Katsina State, said he trained over 200 youths in skills acquisition during his service year, describing the award as an unexpected but encouraging recognition of community service.
