The National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, is to administer free medical care to 3,000 internally displaced people affected by insurgency across five local governments of Borno.

The Borno state coordinator of the scheme, Nura Umar, stated  this at the start of a weeklong 2021 NYSC Health Initiative for Rural Development (HIRD) held at Teacher Village IDPs camp in Maiduguri on Monday.

The free medical treatment and other support services would be provided under its Community Development Service, CDS.

“Our main purpose here is to provide free medical intervention to persons in the IDPs camps because we observed that there is a gap in healthcare delivery system which the NYSC has the medical team to support.

“We are able to mobilise drugs which will be distributed free to the patients in the camps; from here we will move to other camps and our medical outreach will continue to offer free services.

“This IDP camp (Teachers village) hosting  five local government areas, I was reliably informed that this camp host 19,880 people so we are here to render  medical services to as many, like today more than 600 people benefited so at the end of the week, we should be able to reach at least 3,000 people,” Nura said.

The Borno Deputy governor, Umar Khadafur, represented by Commissioner for Special Duties, Kabiru Wanori called HIRD a mega intervention in health care delivery for residents beset by insurgency.

“We will not rest on our oars to ensure that both the corps members and the entire people of Borno state are safe,” Wanori added.

The Chairman of CDS Medical Team Club, Dr Prince Chile, said the medical team would offer diagnosis and drugs throughout the week.
