A statement issued by the registrar of the varsity, Dotun Awoyemi, said the OAU Senate has ordered the university to proceed on mid-semester break from Tuesday, calling on the students to vacate their hostels.
This development was however not well received by the students most of who argued that the university has never went on such break in the past.
Sources said the strange mid-semester break was not unconnected to the continued shutdown of facilities on the campus by the Non Academic Staff Union (NASU) members agitating for the payment of their hazard allowances.
During the protests,   the aggrieved workers closed some of the school’s facilities, including the university’s senate building and library, and stopped vehicular movements on the campus, blocking the main gate of the university for a week.
The NASU leader, Comrade Wole Odewunmi, said OAU management did not pay the hazard allowance in the past 64 months, adding that several meetings between the authorities and NASU did not yield any result.
Speaking during a symposium, the President of the Students Union Government, Mr. Omotayo Akande, hinted that the university may be closed down due to plans by NASU to completely shut the supply of water and electricity.
Akande had said if NASU members continued shutting facilities on the campus, the SUG would call a congress meeting to consider closing the OAU.
