The former President had on February 15, 2015, dumped the ruling party and tore his membership card in his home state of Ogun and declared that he had retired from partisan politics and would prefer to be an Elder statesman.

But speaking at the PDP national secretariat on Tuesday in Abuja when the Students Mobilisation Network for Jonathan paid him a courtesy visit, PDP national secretary, Professor Wale Oladipo said the membership card belonging to the former President which was torn on his directives was an expired card; not signed by the present national chairman and secretary of the party, Alhaji Adamu Mu’azu and Professor Wale Oladipo.

He said Obasanjo did not even tear the membership card himself considering his age and experience in politics, adding that at that age, individuals are bound to do strange things.

“Baba is over eighty and my mother is around Obasanjo’s age. When you reach that age, you do things that only you can explain. Secondly, you will see that Baba did not tear our card, he asked somebody ostensibly to do the tearing and I am assuring you that the card that was torn was not the current PDP card.

“The current PDP is signed by Mu’azu and Prof Wale Oladipo. So the card he tore was a Barage card, which we were going to destroy anyway. Secondly, Baba is a very intelligent man. When Baba was helping us, he knows that a lot of people could have complained that they could have voted for PDP but Baba is there.

“You know when a big tree exits in a big forest, smaller trees cannot grow. If that big tree lives, ten to twenty smaller trees will grow. In politics, one big tree has a vote, while twenty small trees have twenty votes. If you do the arithmetic, I am a scientist, I know that head or tail, it is a win win situation for PDP,” he said.

He said the PDP would do everything democratically possible to win the March 28 presidential elections to ensure that power does not return to the “analog age” saying the days of trade by barter are gone.

According to the party’s national secretary, President Goodluck Jonathan has constitutional powers but uses such powers meticulously, saying his transformation agenda won’t be allowed to be truncated by the opposition.

“Buhari said he will bring the Boko Haram under control, he didn’t say he will fight Boko Haram or crush Boko Haram so Nigerians should beware of this man,” he said.

Oladipo quoted former Head of State, Ibrahim Babangida as saying the APC presidential candidate is unbending and myopic during his reign as Head of State, stressing that the retired General can’t appreciate the needs of the youths if elected President considering that he is already too old to govern the country effectively.
