“Nigeria is bleeding and the hemorrhage must be stopped,” Chief Obasanjo said in his 18-page letter dated December 2, 2013.
In the document titled “Before it is too late”, the former president accused Mr. Jonathan of failing to deliver on his promises to the Nigerian people, stem corruption, promote national unity and strengthen national security.
He said in the letter that rather than take steps to advance Nigeria’s interest and up the standards of living of Nigerians, the president has betrayed the Nigerian people that brought him to power and has been pursuing selfish personal and political interests based on advice he receives from “self-centred aides”.
Mr. Obasanjo alleged Mr. Jonathan has become terribly divisive, destroying his own party, polarising the country along regional and religious lines and ridiculing Nigeria in the comity of nations. He also blamed him for the crises tearing the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) apart.
Reactions to Obasanjo’s letter on the social media have been mixed. While some commentators have been applauding him for exposing what is considered the truly deplorable rot in the system, others have been opposing him as being a contributory factor to the present malaise. Obasanjo has his flaws, but Goodluck, in all honesty, lacks the gift (to rule). One question please, where is the VP…do we have any?
Polycarp Didam: The man, Obasanjo, has done what many past leaders and current politicians will not do because they fear that the Presidency will block their sources of illegal wealth. While Obasanjo may not be a saint, the message captures exactly what Nigeria is going through under the government of GEJ. We must pull ourselves away from ethnicity, religious bigotry and other myopic positions and see the substance of the message.
Mustafa Kamaye: Only men of worth can say what OBJ said. He has thrown the Presidency into a dilemma. He has made my day.
Chuba Okoye: Obasanjo handed over a corrupt government to Yar’Adua and Jonathan has only built on the foundation of the corruption foundation already laid.
Tony Basikoro: This is a case of the kettle calling the pot black.
Fela Oluyemi: As the polarisation that characterises the system proceeds, with no more humanism in the core of them that lead, it will gradually push the masses to a state that will unleash the beast in them.
Many Nigerians hope these words would jolt Mr. President to work on fulfilling the promises he gave the electorate when seeking votes.
