At a news briefing in Abuja yesterday, chairman of the coalition, Alhaji Ali Abacha said it was totally condemnable for Obasanjo to call for the destruction of the entire northern part of the country because of the sins of a tiny group that has no support of the innocent majority.

“What we should be wary of is how to respond to the moral perversion of an unrepentant despot like Obasanjo. The Zaki Biam (Benue state) massacre of 2002 and Odi (Bayelsa) in 1999 are what Obasanjo wants Jonathan to do in the North; but he is wrong because Jonathan is not a despot but a democrat”, Abacha said.

“We also recall how Obasanjo’s government burnt down the house (Kalakuta) belonging to the late Afrobeat king, Fela Anikulapo Kuti. Scores were killed, raped and maimed; the mother of a Pan Africanist, Mrs. Funmilayo Ransome Kuti was thrown from the first floor of a building and later died of complications.”

While calling on Nigerians to rise in condemnation of Obasanjo’s suggestion, Abacha said: “The northeast, just like Odi and Zaki Biam are part of the commonwealth. To order soldiers to murder the people is evil; the people of the north will reject such call by Obasanjo and ask Jonathan to apply wisdom and democratic means to check the problem.”
