The Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki has approved the release of eight prison inmates convicted for various crimes in the state.

The governor also commuted the death sentence of nine other inmates to life imprisonment.

A statement by the Secretary, Advisory Council on Prerogative of Mercy, Mrs Joyce Omotayo Ugbodaga, said the governor freed the inmates in the exercise of the prerogative of mercy in line with the recommendation of the council.

She said the action was in exercise of powers conferred on the governor under section 212 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999, as amended.

While directing the prison authorities to release the freed inmates with immediate effect, she said government hoped that the freed inmates would reciprocate the good gesture of the governor by turning a new leaf and living a crime-free life.

The freed inmates are: Abu Dennis Ulubeka, Tirimisiyu Adebayo, Tajudeen Fabiyi, Olufemi Ajayi, Charles Omowunmi, Kalu Ojeh, Mattew Idoko, and Robinson James.
