The Edo State Governor Mr. Godwin Obaseki, yesterday received Flora Ugwunwa Ekurede, the world record holder and gold medalist in javelin at the 2020 Tokyo Paralympics.

Receiving the gold medalist at the Government House in company of his deputy, Philip Shaibu, Obaseki promised to continue to support sports development in the state.

He also assured that his administration will continue to revamp sporting facilities in the state and sustain investment in the sector so as to create opportunities for Edo youths.

“We are happy to have been able to revamp the sporting facilities in Edo State, giving youths the opportunity to be the best that they can be. The facilities are there and are world-class.

“The government of Edo State is interested in Edo youths. We will continue to invest in sporting facilities while providing appropriate support to bring out the best in them.”

Obaseki, therefore, thanked the world record holder for honouring him by coming to present the gold medal to him in his office.

In her response, Ekurede commended the state government’s relentless commitment to sports development.

“My plan and aim was to break and reset another record but due to the weather in Tokyo, I didn’t break the record. However, I won the gold and I am here to present it to you Mr. Governor,” she said
