Residents of the popular SARS road in Obio Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State have raised concern over the collapsed section of the Sir Celestine Omehia road. 

The dilapidated state of the road had become a cause of concern to hundreds of residents who find it difficult to move freely  for their daily  activities. 

Business activities in the area, our reporter learnt have been paralysed just as  many of the residents are relocating to other parts of the town. 

Some of the residents, who spoke with our reporter, said the poor state of the road was causing untold hardship to them just as socio-economic activities had been at a standstill. 

Adaji Cyprian said the poor state of the road have subjected residents to trauma.  

“The poor state of this road has overwhelmed all those residing in this area. The road has been cut into two and residents are finding it difficult to come in and go out. Movement in  this area have become so traumatic as social and business activities have been at a standstill. Business activities have collapsed and many residents have moved out.We want the state government to come to our aid and fix this road,” he said. 

Another resident, Okwuchi Ubaka, said many of the residents have taken to the social media platforms to draw the attention of the authorities to fix the road. 

“The poor state of this road is posing serious problems to many of the residents. This road is very strategic to the economic wellbeing of the state. The state of the road now has gone beyond what the State Road Maintenance Agency can do. The Agency had on several occasions carried out remedial works on the road’ which collapsed shortly after. We want the State to come in and address the issue of the road frontally,” he said. 

Thankgod Uche said: “Since this section of the road collapsed residents are finding it very difficult to move in and out of the road. Public transport is very difficult to get in this place because so many of the commercial drivers are avoiding the road. A short trip from this area that normally costs N100 has gone up to N200 . We want the government to reconstruct the road.’’ 

An official of the Ministry of Works, who pleaded not to be quoted, said that government will soon look at the state of the road.
