The Director-General, National Centre for Women Development (NCWD), Mary Ekpere-Eta, has called for the establishment of a national sex offenders’ register. Ekpere-Eta said this had become necessary with the rise in sexual violence against women and children across the country.

The director general who was speaking during a courtesy visit by members of the Federal Government Girls’ College, Gboko Old Girls Association yesterday as part of the campaign to get justice for Ochanya Elizabeth Ogbanje (who allegedly suffered years of sexual abuse in her relative’s home), said Nigeria could run a register for sex offenders if countries like Jamaica could do same.

Ekpere-Eta who commended persons and organisations involved in seeking justice for the late Ochanya, also praised the commitment of the association to ensuring that the matter is not relegated to the background.

She told her guests that the wife of the president, Aisha Buhari,  had condemned the molestation of Ochanya by her guardian’s husband and his son, adding that she was monitoring the case and would continue to advocate for a just outcome on the matter while calling on the Inspector General of Police Ibrahim Idris to treat the arrest and prosecution of Victor Ogbuja with the same priority given kidnapping and armed robbery kingpins.

The leader of the team, Dr. Ngozi Azodoh, stressed the need for relevant government agencies to support her association and other credible groups in the fight to ensure justice for Ochanya.
