The National Association of Oduduwa Students (NAOS) has commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for appointing Professor Joash Amupitan as the new Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

In a statement signed by its National President, Amb. Olalere Benedict Adetunji, and Public Relations Officer, Amb. Ajadi Ibrahim, the association described the appointment as “a courageous and historic decision” that promotes inclusiveness and equity in national governance.

NAOS noted that the appointment marked the first time a Yoruba-speaking Nigerian would head the nation’s electoral body since its establishment in 1964.

“The leadership of the Commission has previously rotated among the South-South, South-East, North-West, and North-East regions, leaving the South-West completely sidelined for over six decades,” the statement read.

The group said President Tinubu’s action corrected what it called a long-standing imbalance and demonstrated his commitment to fairness and national unity.

NAOS also congratulated Prof. Amupitan on his new role, describing him as a “distinguished scholar and seasoned administrator” whose experience and integrity would enhance transparency and professionalism in Nigeria’s electoral system.

“We assure Prof. Amupitan of the total support of Yoruba students across the nation as he assumes this crucial national responsibility,” the statement added.

The association urged the new INEC Chairman to uphold the principles of fairness, impartiality, and accountability in carrying out his duties.
