As an enthusiast of quality journalism, I found interesting Mamu’s current face-off with some civil society organizations, which is tantamount to reaping the whirlwind that he sowed through his unsubstantiated claims of possessing a degree outside Nigeria and a Masters Degree from the respected Ahmadu Bello University. Rather than continue to behave like a bull in a China shop by attacking innocent persons, he would do himself (and journalism) a lot of good if he engages in self-introspection and reflect on how to respond to the grave charges hanging on his neck.
Judging from his antecedents, a high preponderance of Nigerians view his claims of attending a non-existent university in Niger Republic and obtaining a Masters Degree from ABU Zaria as preposterous. He should stop chasing shadows by roping Alhaji Bomai and FCTA into his self-inflicted ‘wahala’ with the Coalition of Civil Society groups and face the issues raised squarely. The petition is an open one and so also are the petitioners as their names and contacts are there for all to see.
At this critical juncture, expectations are that the Nigerian Police will wade into the matter by carrying out their statutory responsibilities of investigating Mamu’s bogus claims through contacting the authorities of Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, with a view to either affirming Tukur’s claims or repudiating them. He does not deserve the sympathy of any serious-minded Nigerian, least of all the security agents who are expected to treat this issue with all seriousness it deserves. If a trial, conviction and a stint in jail are what are needed, so be it.
