Gombe United which started the league as top favourites for this year’s title has lost three matches at a stretch and would be up against last year’s runner’s up Sunshine Stars today at home.

Speaking to Feverpitch yesterday, the coach blamed his defenders for the club’s recent misfortune as he said they have simply failed to live up to expectations.

Ogbe said before the match against Enyimba FC, the defenders were given special training but nobody can explain why the team’s defence crumbled at the most critical moment against the people’s elephants.

He said: “I have to blame our poor run in the last three matches on my defenders. They have failed to live up to expectations. Before our match against Enyimba, they were given special training but the same defence crumbled during the match.

“In the other two matches, the something happened and we cannot pretend that we do not know where our problem lies. Losing nine points at a stretch has not helped our title ambition. Presently, it is hard to say if we are title contenders or pretenders”.

The versatile coach however said it is good that the problem of the team has been discovered in good time as he said something would be done at the appropriate time to remedy the situation.

He said Gombe United defence would be overhauled to check some of the lapses that have led to the recent embarrassing results.

“I thank God that this is happening early. Our problem is the defence which I can describe as awful. I am really thinking of overhauling the whole defence. I am already putting all the necessary machinery in motion for this purpose”.

Coach Ogbe therefore called on the team’s teeming supporters to remain calm as he said all hope is not lost.
