Ogun 1st lady advocates 6-month maternity leave

Wife of the Ogun State Governor, Mrs Bamidele Abiodun, has expressed readiness to champion the process of securing six months maternity leave for public servants in the state to enhance exclusive breastfeeding.

Mrs Abiodun disclosed this during the flag off of the 2023 Breastfeeding Week with the theme: “Enabling Breastfeeding, Making a Difference for Working Parents”, held at the Itoko Primary Healthcare Centre (PHC) in Abeokuta South LGA.

While noting that the three-month maternity leave currently in practice would not be sufficient for nursing mothers to breastfeed their babies effectively, she said it was time for the government and all stakeholders to take decisive actions at ensuring supportive breastfeeding, adding that all employers of labour should revisit their professional obligations by prioritising breastfeeding-friendly environments for mothers and babies.
