The Ogun State Government has started demolishing shanties and makeshift structures used by traders in the Kara, isheri, OPIC axes of the Lagos- Ibadan Expressway for constituting environmental infractions.

Leader of the Ogun State Environmental Special Task Force and Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Environment, Farook Akintunde, said the exercise was carried out after the expiration of a 21-day ultimatum.

He explained that the continuous presence of shanties in the axes despite several warnings and abatement notices constituted nuisance to the environment.

Akintunde added that the exercise was also necessary as the shanties and the makeshift structures had become risks to law-abiding citizens of the state as they were used as hideouts by criminals.

Akintunde disclosed that the state government would immediately green the recovered areas with beautiful grasses and lawns which all residents of the state would be proud of, warning the displaced street traders not to test the will of the state government by attempting to stage a comeback.
