Operatives of the Nigerian Army have seized six raps of hemp weighing about 3.5kg, cocaine and other hard drugs following a raid in Ijebu Igbo in Ijebu North Local Government Area of Ogun State.

The troops also arrested a nursing mother, Mrs Kareem Ifeoluwa, after her husband and drug dealer suspect had fled.

The military men, as part of the ongoing ‘Operation Still Water’ exercise, had stormed the community following a tip-off on the activities of the drug dealer.

The unnamed suspect, upon sighting soldiers, fled, but the operatives got hold of his wife and two young men allegedly working with the drug dealer.

The Acting Officer Commanding, Provost Company, 35 Artillery Brigade Command, Alamala Barracks, Abeokuta, Captain Gabriel Onyebuchi, briefed newsmen at the command shortly after handing over of the suspects and the seizures to the officials of the National Drug Law and Enforcement Agency (NDLEA). Onyebuchi explained that the handover would allow the NDLEA to carry on with the necessary prosecution.

He said “There was a tip-off from a liable informant which led them to the raid of the dealer. 

“On seeing the troops, some of them ran away but they were able to apprehend two men and a woman (the man’s wife, and those two others are the man’s boys). 

“After the arrest, they went round the house and these were what they discovered.

“The hemp is about six raps which is about 3.5kg. We have cocaine and other hard drugs here. We have handed them over to the NDLEA so that they can go ahead to prosecute them.”

During an interrogation led by the Exhibit Officer of NDLEA, Bulus Dung, the wife who was carrying her little baby, confirmed that the fleeing suspect is her husband.

She, however, said she was unaware of his drug dealings.

She said “We were at our compound in Ijebu Igbo, when the soldiers came. 

“I didn’t know that my husband was selling drugs, until the day that they came and arrested us. I have spent one week here with my baby and he has refused to show up. 

“I didn’t deny him. He is my husband. We have been living together for two years, but I didn’t know he deals in drugs.”
