 Member representing Ijebu East in the Ogun State House of Assembly, Hon Owode Waliu Ifedolapo, on Tuesday, called for calm over an elephant attack that led to the death of a 49-year-old resident, Musa Yahaya Kalamu.

The victim identified as a logger was reportedly attacked during an encounter with a herd of elephants at the Itasin forest in Ijebu East Local Government.

Daily Trust reports that the development has triggered outrage in the community where human-animal conflicts have been recorded many times.

Reacting to the incident, Ifedolapo expressed regret over the tragic death and described it as unfortunate.

He extended his heartfelt condolences and prayed for strength and peace for the bereaved family.

He also called for calm among residents, acknowledging the fear and anger that such an unusual and tragic event can provoke.

“While we understand the pain and confusion this incident has caused, we urge our people to remain calm. The government is being engaged to take swift and lasting action,” he said.

Ifedolapo further urged the Ogun State Government and relevant wildlife and environmental agencies to take immediate steps to investigate the cause of the incident and implement preventive measures to forestall a recurrence.

The Ogun lawmaker advocated for the immediate implementation of a conservationist development plan in the area to manage human-wildlife boundaries and ensure the safety of lives and property, while preserving ecological balance.

“This tragedy highlights the urgent need for coordinated efforts between conservation agencies, local authorities, and the state government. Our communities should not live in fear of wildlife attacks. We must strike a balance between conservation and safety,” he added.

Ifedolapo reaffirmed his commitment to working with all stakeholders to ensure effective solutions are deployed and that such an incident never repeats itself.

The lawmaker also promised that the matter would be discussed on the floor of House as part of efforts to find a lasting solutions to the incident.
