The wife of Ogun state governor, Dr Olufunso Amosun has said there is need to expose more Nigerian youth to the opportunities in green jobs.
Mrs Amosun said she considers unemployed youth in Nigeria as the most vulnerable, saying they are promising, energetic, talented but frustrated by joblessness and as such they are ungovernable and susceptible for survival.
The governor’s wife who spoke at the Nigeria Climate Change Investment Forum in Abuja this week said, “Our youths needs to be gainfully employed, they are vibrant, adaptable, mobile and upward looking. They are destined leaders of tomorrow and fundamental stream force to be tapped into and as such need to raise the passion to drive the climate change agenda.”
She sought the engagement of youth on renewable energy and other green economy plans and the integration of environmental studies into school curriculum to drive the effect of climate change to the next generation.
The Curator of Nigeria Climate Change Investment Initiative, Dr Paul Abolo stressed the need for easy access to funds to mitigate adverse effects of climate change.
He said the forum with the theme: ‘Accessing Funding and Foreign Direct Investment in Green Economy: Processes, Partnership and Projects’ is meant to find ways of creating more jobs in the green economy for youth and how they can access grants.
“In Europe for instance, Nigeria only access three per cent of the total fund available for the country on climate change,” he noted.
While urging Nigerians to take leadership of green economy in Africa, Dr Abolo maintained that tackling the effects of climate change needs conceited efforts by all to reduce depletion of environment.
