The Ogun State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its 2023 governorship candidate, Ladi Adebutu, on Monday endorsed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as their preferred candidate for the 2027 presidential election.
State party chairman, Abayomi Tella, made the declaration in Sagamu during the flag-off of the PDP campaign for the Ikenne/Sagamu/Remo North federal constituency by-election.
Present at the event was the party’s National Vice Chairman (South-West), Engr Kamorudeen Ajisafe, who officially presented the party flag to the candidate, Bolarinwa Oluwole.
Oluwole is seeking to replace the late Hon. Adewunmi Oriyomi Onanuga, the constituency’s former representative, who passed away in January.
Addressing supporters, Tella said the Ogun PDP would back Tinubu based on regional loyalty, describing the president as a son of the South-West.
“We will support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. Though he is in the opposition, let us support our own from the South-West. Our support is for Tinubu, and we will stand by him. We are ready to give him our votes. The whole of the South-West will give him our votes,” Tella said.
“All we want in that election is fairness and justice,” he added.
Also speaking at the event, Adebutu stressed that the Ogun PDP harboured no ill feelings towards Tinubu or his leadership, even though the party remains in opposition.
“I was with the president in January, and I told him that we have no issue with his leadership and candidacy,” Adebutu said.
However, he took aim at Governor Dapo Abiodun, accusing the Ogun APC-led government of underperformance. He vowed that the PDP would mount a serious challenge in the 2027 elections to take control of the state.
The endorsement by Ogun PDP comes amid efforts by the party’s national leadership to resolve internal crises and unite around a strong candidate for 2027. It follows a similar move by the Osun State chapter of the PDP, which recently also pledged support for President Tinubu’s re-election bid, raising concerns about unity and direction within the opposition party as it prepares for the next electoral cycle.
