The commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development in Ogun State, Adijat Adeleye, has called for a special court to try perpetrators of rape and other gender-based acts of violence.

 Adeleye made the call at a media parley held at her office in  Oke Mosan, Abeokuta, the state capital.

She explained that the establishment of the special court will help hasten justice for the victims.

Adeleye lamented the rising cases of rape and gender-based violence in the state, saying hardly would a day pass without recording of a case.

The commissioner disclosed that since inception to office, over 200 cases have been recorded with some being dispensed, a few convicted and a whole lot still in court.

 “As at the last count we have over 200 cases; some have been dispensed with, a few convicted and we still have a whole lot in court.

 “We are clamouring for a special court to try these perpetrators and offenders because they still go to the regular court.

Stressing that men have also been seen as victims of gender-based violence, Adeleye urged all to speak to protect their rights.

While appreciating the judiciary for its support and proper adjudication of the cases, she noted that some cases are still pending as the judges have other cases to attend to.
