The Ogun State Government said it has committed N960 million to the enrollment of 70,000 indigent residents into its health insurance scheme.

It said the funding included the cost of a previously implemented free surgery exercise which was part of the government’s palliative care measures for its citizens.

Dr Afolabi Dosunmu, the Executive Secretary of the Ogun State Health Insurance Agency (OGSHIA), highlighted Governor Dapo Abiodun’s intervention as instrumental in achieving the milestone.

He said the aim was not only to eliminate out-of-pocket expenses for vulnerable individuals, but also to work towards achieving Universal Health Coverage (UHC).

Dosunmu explained that Governor Abiodun’s initiative, announced about six weeks ago, was designed to alleviate hardship in the country.

“Under this programme, beneficiaries of free surgeries are first enrolled in the health insurance scheme at no cost. They are then screened and scheduled for surgery. The total cost of enrolling 70,000 people in the insurance scheme, which started with the free surgical intervention, amounts to N960m,” he said.
