Governor Ibikunle Amosun, who disclosed this while declaring open the 2014 World Environment Day with the theme: “Raise Your Voice, Not the Sea Level,” also said he has given approval for the engagement of additional 2, 000 street sweepers to complement the efforts of the 1, 000 previously engaged.
The governor revealed that approval of N1bn for the procurement of additional waste management equipment has been given, saying his government aimed to provide an alluring and aesthetic environment.
He said these efforts can only become successful if the people reciprocated by protecting the flowers and grasses planted.
The governor said: “While we continue to push forward our industrialisation agenda, we are not oblivious to the environmental cost as well. This is why we always encourage incoming investors to embrace clean production technology and provide plans for acceptable environmental management.
“In like manner, existing industries are being engaged on regular basis to, as much as possible, invest in emerging process technology that do not only optimise resource utilisation but also very low environmental impact.”
Amosun said that the desire of his administration was to re-create the environment and bring its people closer to nature, noting that this warranted its campaign for a going green society.
The various road construction projects embarked upon in the last three years in the state, according to him, have helped reduced the incidence of flooding and erosion.
He added: “We are returning to the concept of sustainable development which is evident in the manner we constructed drainages, median for flowers as well as pedestrians walk-ways on our road projects. We are committed to a united, stable and economically prosperous state built on strong democratic principles.”
