The Ogun State government has planned to build on the gains of the policy of encouraging the use of adire (garment) in schools by establishing a garment institute in 2021.

The government said it would enable entrepreneurs produce more garments and export the products to the United States duty-free under the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA).

The Commissioner for Industry, Trade and Investment, Mrs. Kikelomo Longe, made this known while presenting the ministry’s 2021 budget proposal during the state’s treasury board meeting on the 2021-2023 Medium-Term Expenditure Framework and the 2021 budget at the Obas Complex, Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta.

Mrs. Kikelomo said the institute, in partnership with the Nigerian Export Promotion Council (NEPC), would create more job opportunities for unemployed youths and earn foreign exchange (forex) for rapid economic growth of the state.

She added that as part of the drive to create enabling environment and improve the ease of doing business in the state, the ministry also intended to upgrade the Technology Incubation Centre at Onijanganjangan, as well as establish a cosmetics, soap and detergent facility, to meet latest technological advancement.

She explained that the ministry is proposing N731,932,191.10, representing 62.80 per cent for capital expenditure, and N433, 538,374.80 as 37.20 per cent for recurrent expenditure, while aiming to generate N1,225, 000,000.
