Sherif Olabisi Ogunyemi is a remarkable individual whose academic journey, research expertise, and community-driven initiatives paint a compelling portrait of a dedicated scientist with an unwavering commitment to advancing biochemistry, medical research, and the betterment of society. His story, shaped by curiosity, perseverance, and a desire to contribute to global health, is one of intellectual excellence and passion for discovery.

From a young age, Sherif was immersed in the rich heritage of African traditional medicine. Growing up in an environment where herbal remedies were commonly used for ailments like malaria, typhoid, and diarrhea, he experienced firsthand the benefits of these natural treatments. Yet, his innate curiosity pushed him beyond simple acceptance. As a teenager, Sherif began to question the underlying mechanisms behind the healing properties of these herbal remedies. It was this curiosity that ultimately led him to pursue a career in the life sciences. His academic path in biochemistry started at Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, where he earned a Bachelor’s degree with a focus on toxicology and the potential dangers of unregulated herbal medicine use. Through his education, he realized that while herbal medicine has long been an integral part of African culture, there was a need to address its safety and efficacy scientifically.

Sherif’s academic journey continued at the University of Lagos, where his brilliance shone even brighter. His outstanding academic performance earned him the prestigious title of the best graduating student in the biochemistry program, a feat he had already achieved during his undergraduate years at LAUTECH. This achievement reflected his deep understanding of biochemistry’s potential to solve pressing health issues, especially in Africa. With an exceptional blend of theoretical knowledge and practical application, Sherif set out to address the very challenges that had piqued his interest in herbal medicine: understanding and mitigating the harmful effects of toxic compounds and ensuring the safety of plant-based therapies.

Sherif’s research trajectory has been nothing short of impressive. At Nazo Medical Diagnostics Services, he began honing his skills in laboratory testing, rotating through various departments such as chemical pathology, hematology, and microbiology. This hands-on experience deepened his understanding of diagnostic techniques and data analysis, which would later prove invaluable in his academic research. It was here that Sherif learned not only how to use a diverse range of scientific equipment but also how to present findings in a clear and concise manner, a skill that would benefit him greatly in his research career.

His subsequent independent research under the mentorship of Professor Adewale Adetutu involved evaluating the antiplasmodial and hepatoprotective properties of several plant extracts. Sherif’s meticulous approach and mastery of experimental techniques, including UV spectrophotometry and Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry, produced results that supported the therapeutic potential of these plants. His findings were so compelling that they earned him recognition as one of the best presenters at the College of Basic Medical Sciences. This early research set the stage for his future endeavors, particularly in the area of drug discovery and the safety of herbal compounds.
As a research assistant in the Computational Biochemistry/Drug Discovery Laboratory at the University of Lagos, Sherif expanded his expertise into computational chemistry, working on a project that sought to identify novel EGFR inhibitors for cancer therapy. Using cutting-edge molecular docking and dynamics simulation techniques, Sherif contributed to the discovery of promising drug candidates, leading to a publication in the Journal of Molecular Modeling. This success was a testament to Sherif’s growing proficiency in integrating experimental research with computational tools, a skill that would become one of his trademarks.

Sherif’s master’s thesis, which explored the relationship between Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency and hypertension, demonstrated his ability to combine his biochemistry knowledge with real-world health concerns. Although the study showed no direct association between G6PD deficiency and hypertension, it revealed the high prevalence of G6PD deficiency, a finding that could impact future healthcare strategies. This research, along with his work on cancer therapeutics and his in-depth exploration of T-cell immunoglobulin and mucin-domain containing-3 (TIM-3) in cancer therapy, reflects Sherif’s commitment to tackling complex medical issues with innovative scientific approaches. His work on developing small-molecule inhibitors against TIM-3, about to be published in the Journal of In Silico Pharmacology, demonstrates his capacity to apply computational biochemistry in identifying potential cancer treatments.

In addition to his research contributions, Sherif’s role as a teaching assistant has allowed him to mentor future scientists. His experience in teaching molecular biology, biochemistry topics, and data analysis has not only solidified his own knowledge but also strengthened his leadership abilities. Through his work as a mentor, Sherif has helped guide undergraduate students through their research projects and fostered a deeper understanding of biochemistry, ensuring that his passion for science is passed on to the next generation.
Beyond his academic and research endeavors, Sherif has made significant contributions to his community. He founded “Maths and Chemistry with Sherif,” a non-governmental organization that helps high school students improve their understanding of mathematics and chemistry. He also initiated the “Health Outreach, Isolo Initiative,” providing free health services such as Body Mass Index and blood pressure checks to local residents. These initiatives underscore Sherif’s commitment to using his knowledge to improve the health and well-being of his community, particularly in underserved areas.
