Poet Ogwuche Oche Edwin has announced his arrival on the literary scene with his new poetry collection, ‘My Mind’s Eyes’.
The Theatre Arts Graduate from Benue State University, Makurdi, said his debut collection is “focused on contemporary issues that range from personal experience to societal expectations.”
However, the unusual collection which features only eight poems comes with detailed information about each poem, including background, setting, themes, subject matter analysis and stanza by stanza scrutiny.
“I wrote the book that way because I have students in mind,” Ogwuche told Daily Trust. “I also have in mind people who are not into poetry, to make it more accessible to them.”
Asked why he took it upon himself to explain and analyse his own poems, Ogwuche said, “I feel I am in the best place to explain what I feel even though readers are free to interpret what they want from the works.”
Ogwuche, who grew up in Jos, has been dabbling into poetry since he was inspired by the September 7, 2001 riots in Jos. He penned his first poem, “Mayhem” as a reaction to the violence that occurred on that day and has never looked back since.
‘My Mind’s Eyes’ is the first volume of a planned trilogy of poetry, which he hopes will be adopted as study text in schools. The second and third volumes are still in the works, according to the author.
