Nnedi Okorafor, Tomi Adeyemi, Akwaeke Emezi, Tunde Leye and many more Nigerians have made the 2019 Nommo Awards longlist.
The African Speculative Society’s Nommo Awards announced its longlist in four categories: novel, novella, short story, and graphic novel.
In the novel category are Leye (‘Afonja: The Rise’), Adeyemi (‘Children of Blood and Bone’), Emezi (‘Freshwater’) and Tochi Onyebuchi (‘Crown of Thunder’). Other authors are Temi Oh (‘Do You Dream of Terra Two?’), Cat Hellisen (‘Empty Monsters’), Unathi Slasha (‘Jah Hills’), Nechama Brodie (‘Knucklebone’), Frank Owen (‘North’), Wayétu Moore (‘She Wound Be King’), Amelie Diack (‘Shouna: La Genese’), Imraan Coovadia (‘A Spy in Time’), Masha du Toit (‘The Strange’) and Esi Edugyan (‘Washington Black’).
Okorafor made the novella longlist for her sci-fi ‘Binti, Nerine Dorman for ‘The Firebird’, Ishola Abdulwasiu Ayodele for ‘Nocturnal’, Mame Bougouma Diene for ‘Fistulas’, Sofia Samatar for ‘Hard Mary’, and Caldron Mull for ‘Neld Fire’.
Nigeria’s Malaysia-based writer and editor, Wole Talabi and Okorafor are nominated in different categories and more than once in a category. Talabi is on the short story longlist, which is dominated by Nigerians, for ‘Drift Flux’, ‘When We Dream, We Are Our God’ and ‘The Harmonic Resonance of Ejiro Anaborhi’.
In the Graphic novel longlist is ‘Under the Sun’ by Austine Osas (writer & creator), Abiodun Awodele (writer), Yusuf Temitope (art), Nsia Ndidi (colours and cover art) and Peter Daniel (lettering).
Previous winners of the Nommo Awards are Tade Thompson, Nnedi Okorafor, Tendai Huchu and Lesley Nneka Arimah in 2017, and Tade Thompson, Kwabena Ofei, Setor Fiadzigbey, Wole Talabi, and Tochi Onyebuchi in 2018.
The Nommo Awards were introduced to draw attention to writing such as magical realism, Sci-Fi and other forms that could not be categorised in the ‘standard spaces’ in the African literary scene.
The 2019 shortlist will be announced on May 14 and the winners later in the year.
