Award-winning author, Nnedi Okorafor, has announced that she will be writing a 3-issue (so far) storyline of Black Panther for @Marvel. She shared the information with her fans via tweeter and also teased them with the cover of Issue 1.
The new series will focus on T’Challa, the king, defending his fictional nation, Wakanda. Andre Araujo and Chris O’Halloran, will be responsible for the illustration and colours, respectively, for Black Panther: Long Live the King which will run as a six issue, bi-weekly production. It will be published digitally by Marvel and ComiXology.
ComiXology teases fans with a few specifics on the plot of Okorafor’s new series: “As the Black Panther and an Avenger, T’Challa has had to save the world time and again – but those duties pale in comparison to his responsibilities as king of Wakanda. As the nation rebuilds in the wake of revolution, T’Challa finds his people besieged by a massive monster tearing through the country, leaving a trail of destruction in its wake!”
Black Panther: Long Live the King will running on December 13, “on comiXology and Kindle as part of the comiXology Originals line of exclusive digital content and will be available to current subscribers of the popular comiXology Unlimited service,” comicsbeat.com reported.
The site also guides newcomers to appreciating the series. In July Okorafor revealed via her tweeter handle that HBO had adopted her 2010 fantasy novel ‘Who Fears Death’ has been adapted by Home Box Office (HBO) for a television series. The novel which was picked up by producer, George R.R. Martin for the series, won the 2010 Carl Brandon Kindred Award in 2010, for outstanding work of speculative fiction dealing with race and ethnicity because of its unique blend of Nigerian culture with science fiction. In 2011 it won the World Fantasy Award for best novel.
Okorafor who is no stranger to writing for comics, has previously written for Marvel as part of the Venomverse: War Stories anthology.
Although Okorafor’s first piece of fiction was in 1993 in a creative writing class and her first story, a short story entitled ‘Uche’ was published in 2000, her now very successful YA novel, Zahrah the Windseeker, is what shot her into limelight in 2005 and ushered in her now prolific career as an author.
She is also creating another Marvel comic series entitled ‘Blessing in Disguise.’ It was inspired by the Chibok girls. Okorafor has also just released Akata Warrior, a sequel to her earlier book Akata Witch.
